Bangladesh is about to enter the era of improved public transport as the country’s first metro rail was launched from December 16 this year. All coaches of this electronically operated train will be fully air-conditioned. Metrorail fares are also more or less fixed. According to the proposed fare, a metro rail ride from Uttara to Motijheel will cost Tk 90. The minimum fare will be Rs.20, a passenger can travel to maximum two stations. Even if passengers cross the distance of one station, the fare will be 20 taka. According to the project officials, the travel time between Motijheel and Uttara will be 35 minutes.

DMTCL Managing Director (MD) MAN Siddique told Bangla Tribune that from December 29, fast passes and general tickets can be collected from the counter. There are two ticketing systems for passengers who wish to travel by Metrorail in Dhaka – automatic and manual. In automated system, passengers can get their tickets themselves but a passenger can get maximum five tickets at a time.
The manual system follows the traditional method of buying tickets over the counter by paying cash, UNB said. After receiving the ticket, all passengers have to enter through the gate using a smart pass card and can use the escalator to reach the third floor platform.

How the Metro Rail fare will be paid?
Two types of tickets are proposed in the initial plan. A permanent card, it can be recharged and used for a whole year or a whole month. The card costs Rs 200 and can be recharged online from Rs 200 to Rs 10,000. The card can also be recharged at machines installed at every metro rail station. Passengers must punch their card at the platform entrance or the doors will not open. Passengers will not be able to exit unless the card has to be punched again while leaving the train.
